Meetings and working in teams are demanding
What happens, when we wish to solve everything in group? The most common symptom of this is the so called “meeting tourism”. Meeting after meeting, there’s no time left to immerse into details at work. We spend less and less time working alone on important papers, analyses or reviewing plans, proposals.
In the 21. century, companies use their employees’ mental abilities at work. Psyche is the new productive workforce. Meanwhile, we hardly leave time for our mind to create. Regardless of cooperative work efficiency, in reality, we create/produce majority of our work alone. Brainstorming is very valuable because we get inspired, set directions, prepare drafts, clarify situations. Therefore, it is also really exhausting. Exhausting because we pay attention to more people at once, take part in several interactions so after a while, we will shut down. There’s a big chance of missing some important information. So the value of meetings will decrease.
On the other hand, more meetings mean more topics and always switching between them decreases the efficiency of our brain. Each switch wants us to re-evoke the context of a new subject, which requires time and energy. We also spend so much time in others’ company and dealing with many things that we utterly deprive our mind from regeneration.
One very productive method to regenerate is to go on a walk (in a pleasant park), when we only focus on our own thoughts (we should have a small notebook with ourselves so we can write down the most important ones – leave your phone at home). Most importantly, we must dedicate time for individual work – no meetings– at least half a day per week, but ideally a couple of hours a day would be better. In these time slots we should deal with things important to us.
